In a Mastermind meeting with other (non-appraiser) business owners, I was reminded of how well so many principles that I share with you apply across different areas, whether it’s real estate or office work. There was a man by the name of Jack who was talking about how much he has to do. He’s constantly taking calls and responding to emails, without time to rest. He mentioned that his family was going to Disney Land for a week. Instead of spending the whole week with his family however, he was bummed that he had to stay home for a couple extra days before meeting them in California. When asked why he was leaving 2 days later, he said that if he’s not there, the work doesn’t get done. He is simply too busy to be able to leave with his family.
Can you guess what one of the most common pieces of advice was for Jack? If you guessed utilizing the law of delegation, you’re correct! This man needed to find someone to give some of his work to. He was trapped in the idea that in order to make sure a job is done right, you have to do it yourself. I’ve never heard a bigger load of nonsense in my life. In every job, there is something that can probably be done by someone else. For Jack, it was a form that he had to fill out over and over again. It took him 10 minutes to fill it out. If he could train someone else to put the correct information in the form, he could save himself a load of time, even if he checked over every completed form. Simple data entry can be a great place to start as you dip your toes into the law of delegation.
The Law of Delegation is just that: a law. It works. It is true across industries. You will probably have some negative experiences with the law of delegation at some point; don’t allow that to stop you. When you’re able to go and spend the whole week at Disneyland with your family because you freed up your time by delegating part of your job to someone else, you will thank me. You don’t have to trade time for money – you can go the other way. You just need to learn how to delegate.
