Appraiser Diet

I don’t know about you, but I eat out for lunch nearly every day. We appraisers are on the road a lot, and eating out is typically the easiest option. As many of you know, this past year, I have focused more on my health. I try to go to the gym at least five days a week, and I have been trying to eat healthier. While I am no expert in health and fitness, I wanted to share some of the things I have learned as I have tried to live a healthy lifestyle that works with my appraiser lifestyle.

First, probably one of the best things you can do for lunch is pack a lunch the night before. That way, you can ensure that you will get a healthy meal. However, I personally love eating out on a daily basis. It gives me a break and something to look forward to, so I try to find healthier options while on the road.

As a general rule, I try to avoid carbs. Most restaurants (even fast food places) will allow you to convert a sandwich or burger into a lettuce wrap or salad. Rather than getting a soda, I will typically get a green tea or water. Fries or other greasy sides can often be substituted for a side salad. Additionally, I have found recently that counting calories also helps me stay on track with eating healthy.  I personally use the My Fitness app.

Ultimately, what I eat for lunch tends to determine how the rest of my day goes. If I eat crappy, I feel crappy and sluggish. But when I eat healthy, I find that I have more energy to get me through the rest of my day, and I feel better about myself.  What about you? Where and what do you eat. Please share in the comments.

  2. Just cut out foods with added sugars. Also cut out cookies, crackers, muffins, cake, donuts, sugar cereals and oatmeal, and white bread. No sodas for sure. I started this 6 months ago and have lost 50 lbs. I eat a lot though, i’m a big guy, i was 345 lbs, now just under 300. I have only changed my eating habits by following these rules and I feel great. When i’m on the road, i stop at the grocery store for lunch meat, rotisserie chicken, fruits, bai water, and/or cheese. If I’m lucky I’m near a Kroger or Tom Thumb where i can get steamed shrimp. I avoid fast food and restaurants because they use lots of sauces which have lots of added sugar and they used mostly processed meats with trans fats. The crazy part about my weight loss, is i haven’t even started an exercise program yet and i have lost 50 lbs.

  3. Most days I have a protein smoothie that has about 40 grams of protein between the grass fed whey protein and collagen. I add in a cup of green spring mix vegetables, some mixed berries or pineapple and two cups of whole milk. It’s low on sugar, high on protein and helps me maintain high energy through the middle of the day! On days I eat out, I try to have a good source of protein with vegetables. For me, food is all about managing and creating energy!

  4. I agree, eating out while on inspection days gives me a needed break and something to look forward to. I have learned over the years which places to stop that I can get a healthy meal ( I’m a vegetarian much to the dismay of everyone in my family). But a protein smoothie with spinach and berries is a great way to start the day! Also carry a protein bar and banana or apple with me just in case. Agreed, kick the sugar and simple carbs to the curb!!

  5. Packed my lunch for years. Also kept water & appropriate snacks in the vehicle – apples are great as they are not messy & do not require heating or cooling. I really never liked stopping for a meal while working, seemed to break my rhythm. Plus, I’m a picky eater & finding a place I liked was also a problem not to mention time waster.

  6. What a good blog! One thing I would like to add is I usually incorporate and extra half hour to 45 minutes into my day to park the car, get out and walk for 15 – 20 minutes between appointments and/or comps. Of course this works best in urban areas, but I also have had some lovely walks down a dirt road in the country. It gives me energy and keeps me mindful of my health.

  7. It’s refreshing to know what other’s are doing out there. I Eat Breakfast, wait for the Morning traffic to clear, do my inspections & eat a granola bar & water up. Return home, change & hit Planet Fitness for 45 minutes of cardio and light weights. We cook a healthy dinner and have desert while watching TV with Tea. Write reports the next day/s and repeat. Life is good especially when you can eat a corn dog & mustard when so desired too. My bookkeeper, wife & I take our bikes and do rides before or after inspections frequently when our paths find a trail. Feel the Bliss.

  8. I usually try to eat a meal before I leave my home office for appointments, and take along snacks such as granola/energy bars, fruit, homemade jerky, or crackers, cheese & nuts. My vice is Diet Pepsi, and I take a cooler with several cans. For a long day, I might pack a sandwich. Those will usually suffice until I get home, but I also have a few select places I might stop and pick up food I can eat in the car. For instance, one small town has excellent chicken salad sandwiches in their deli, another has a good sub shop. I don’t like wasting time sitting in a restaurant eating when I could be getting home sooner.
