Check Your Oil

You need to take care of yourself, even when you are busy and you’re having record breaking months. You can work hard but you still need to include some rest and relaxation. However, you simply can’t run yourself into the ground. What you do on a regular basis can catch up to you, you can’t maintain running full speed ahead forever and ever.

You can blow an engine when you don’t check the oil and you can burn out your body when you don’t relax. Have you checked yourself? Even if your business is going crazy, are you keeping yourself rested and relaxed? Are you doing what you need to do to keep yourself up and running?

Relaxing will be different for everyone.  I might go watch a movie, play a round of golf, or treat myself to dinner out for a small break.  Sometimes you need to go bigger and take a vacation.

Whatever works for you, make sure that you’re taking that time to relax.

In the book Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, author Alex Soojung-Kim Pang explains the science behind why it’s so important to take a break.  He explains why the greats, the successful people of the world, regularly took time to relax. I encourage you to read this book and take some time to chill out.  Get away from your office and do things differently. Focus on taking care of yourself.

  2. I’m guilty. Good advice. I appraise, run my own real estate brokerage and occasionally sell a home. I average over 60 hours a week over the year and I’m 68 years old. A few years ago I had major surgery. I spent three weeks in the hospital. Believe it or not, that period of time was refreshing.

  3. Considering some appraisers hire virtual assistants, hire people from 3rd world countries to write the report, visit the office only one time a week, and do reviews in as little as 30 minutes, some say to do any less would mean one is not an appraiser at all.

    Seek the truth.

  4. I’m not trying to be snarky or, deliberately miss the point. But. Time off reminds me of what Ben Hogan once said to a struggling golfer who asked him for advise: I’d take two weeks. Then, quit. If I ever really got free of this loop of inspection, paper work, disappointed clients, agents, loan officers, buyers, sellers and spouses, I’m not sure I could force myself to jump back in it. I need a sabbatical. Remember that VP, for Wal-Mart? Not sure of the company. He took a month off. Flew down to a private island and just . . . soaked up the sun, I guess. I’m amazed by the people who built their businesses to the level that it does not run them. Unfortunately, I am not in that boat.

  6. After going and going and going for weeks at a time, the monotony of the routine kicks in big time. And otherwise sharp brain turns into a dull one, critical thinking takes longer and ultimately workbox me down. When I turn in my last report yesterday I said to my wife, I’m going to take 2 days off. First thing this morning when she drove to the gas station to fill up the gas can so that I can run the leaf mulcher cross the yard. Looking at all that’s piled up I guess I know what I’m going to be doing for the next 2 days. LOL

  7. I agree. I am ready for a vacation. I am exhausted. Working 10 am to 2 pm Monday through Thursday with 1 hour lunch, nap time, then ice cream break. I don’t know why I am always falling behind?
