Mobile Appraising

Switching to a laser measurer for appraising was one of the best business decisions I ever made. I have saved countless hours of time and frustration in my home observations. A laser measurer allows me to measure a home in less than half the time that a tape measure would take. If you are not yet currently using a laser measurer, I highly suggest you look into it. This tool can transform the way you appraise.

There is not a home that cannot be measured by a laser. When measuring, you always have multiple techniques built into the device that are at your disposal. Although it is rare, there are times when I cannot find something to bounce my laser off of, but due to the advanced technology found in many laser measurers, there are many other options for finding the dimensions of the home. If you want to know more about these options, I strongly suggest you check out my Mobile Appraising Workshop on my website where I demonstrate the multiple techniques for measuring a home with a laser.

Now, I understand that there will likely be a learning curve when it comes to switching to a laser measurer. It can be a difficult and slightly intimidating adjustment, but I can promise you that once you start using one, you will wonder why you ever used anything else.

  1. I have been using a laser for a long time. The first one was $99 from Lowes. Worked very well. The new one is a Disto X4, $500. The Disto allows me to get a measurement when there is nothing to bounce the beam off of. The problem I have is I cannot read the screen in sunlight. The $99 one was better than the $500 one. They are great for inside and save me a lot of time. Do you have the same problem in the sun light? If so what is your solution?

    1. I have the x4. If the power in the batteries gets low, it saves power by changing the screen brightness to low (1/6). Go into setting and change the screen brightness to 6/6. Easy to read in sunlight.

  2. Don, I have been using a laser for years, I also have a Disto, I bought a $10 pair of red glasses, that works great. more stuff to carry but you can string them along your neck.

  3. I have a Disto D2. My first lasted 6 years and I’m into year 4 with the second. The next one will have blue tooth. The add/subtract function is invaluable. There is always something to bounce off of. I even carry a couple of post it notes on the inside of my iPad case and can stick one of those on a wall if necessary.

  4. I have used the disto 7500I for years with the camera screen when needed. I love using the lasar and have not used the red glasses yet.

  5. The laser measuring clan, also know as RTOFG (Round to the Nearest Foot Group), or SONPIDOS (Society of Never putting in Doors or Stairs). Good luck following ANSI standards (Interior wall) when your doing those condos boys. KISS, Keep it Simple Stupid.

Seek the truth, or just write in the word stairs.

    1. Sorry, wrong group, RTOFG stands for Round to Often Fail GLA. Got to go, no time to color coordinate my sketch as every thing is done in black.

Seek the truth, and seeing in color for decades.
