When Your Server is Halfway Around the Globe…

I have a server. It’s not the racks, the room, and the computers buzzing that you may think of when you hear about a server. It’s just a large desktop computer that holds all my software, and I am able to access it remotely through VPN anywhere in the world. I was truly amazed by this during a trip that I took with my wife to Australia a little while ago.

Just let that sink in for a moment. I was on a trip in Australia. My home and office are in Idaho. I was about as close as you can get to halfway around the globe from my computer (just the flight from California to Sydney was 14 or 15 hours). While I was in Australia, I wanted to be able to access my server. And, surprisingly, you don’t need a fancy server to do this.

You can do this with any Windows 10 machine, specifically using Windows 10 pro. Windows 10 pro comes with a program called remote desktop login. Using an app called RD Client (which is available for apple and maybe for android – android users let me know), I can log in to my server remotely and do anything that I need to do. I could write up a whole appraisal from my phone, if I wanted to.

This is a great little app, and makes remote access of your server a breeze! RD Client with Windows 10 pro is definitely a game-changer. If you travel a lot – or just need a weekend away sometimes – this is a great little piece of technology that allows you to do all you need to do while you’re away from the office!

  2. I’m currently using an old Dell Workstation as a server for my appraisal office. We have 6 employees all logging in with no issues. My all in cost was under $2,000 with very little maintenance required and no ongoing fees other than my internet service.

  3. Interesting my save me some time by having to find the file in Titan download to laptop and the remembering to upload the damn thing back up to the cloud and then onto my desktop. Several times that has happened. Will take a look a see. I am an Android guy so have no idea about RD Client

  5. Dustin, a few months in and True Footage is already giving you weeks of vacation. Somethings fishy.

With residential work being down 60 to 80%, good luck to everyone who drank the coach’s Kool-Aid, worked to build a business model with AMC work, and hired a bunch of people they no longer need.

    Seek the truth.
